What is Acne?

First you should what is acne actually? An acne can be describe as a plugged pores (blackhead or whitehead) pimples that can occur on any part of your body like face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms or on legs.  Acne affects most teenagers to some extent.  However, the disease is not restricted to any particular age group; adults in their 20s - even into their 40s – or even the newborn babies - can get acne.

Types of Acne

Acne develops when the hair follicle of skin gets plugged by overproduction of sebum, dead cells and become infected by bacteria. This leads to swelling, redness and pain at the site of infection.

Acne can be categories by its size and whether it is “inflammatory” of “non-inflammatory.” The beginning of acne is the smallest type of lesion, called a microcomedo. And it’s so small that it can not be seen without a microscope. This is just the beginning of acne formation. Depending on the growth of this microcomedo, it may develop in to an open comedo (blackheads) or closed comedo (whiteheads).

But there is no single form of acne. A very small to severe acne vulgaris consists of the following types of acne spots:

Whiteheads

They appears on the skin like a raised white bump and usually appear on the sides of the nose, cheekbones and where the skin is thick and fine. Whiteheads don't look as ugly as blackheads and other types of acne but if they set in the skin deep, they can create problem to you.

A Whiteheads appears on your skin surface when a pore is completely blocked by sebum (oil), bacteria, and dead skin cells. It generally appears where the skin is fine and delicate like just above the cheekbones.

Blackheads

The first stage of acne, blackeheads, are zint having a partially closed opening on the skin surface. They named blackhead because of their blackish appearance which is due to the oxidation of clogging material that is keratin and sebum.  As Blackheads are not restricted to any specific skin type, although more prone to oily skin.

Pustule or Pimples

Pustule is small red round with a white or yellow centre. Pustule is pain less and contains pus. Whitish inflammation in pustule is due to the aggregation of the white blood cells, the cells of body immune system. Pustule is prone to that area of body where bacterial infection is common like area having excessive sweating. Squeezing of pustule may results in permanent scar.

Papule

Papule also knows as pimple, is the most common form of acne takes place. Papule is inflamed acne lesion as a small, radish bump on the skin without any head and does not contain pus. Formation of papule due to the breakage of follicle wall and releasing of cellular debris and bacteria into the upper layer of skin, Dermis. Most of the time papule results to scar on the affected area which  takes 3-4 months to disappear if remain untreated with few exception where it leave permanent scar. Papule often leads to a pustule.

Nodules

It’s a sever condition of acne with painful and larger lesions and can last for long. Nodules are characterized by blocked oil glands that produce inflamed skin and tissue. It affects the deeper layer of skin and if not treated properly results in permanent scarring.
